Patch Sustainability Efforts

100% recycled patches 100% recycled patch backer
ClassB has switched to 100% recycled PE plastic for the backer on embroidered BSA patches! We are very proud of the increased sustainability of our scout patches. It was difficult to get the chemistry right for the ink to be stable on the plastic during the heat process. The first rolls of the backer are OK (see picture). Print quality is getting better with every roll.
BSA patches have an option to use 2 stickers in place of the plastic backer. We can do this, but the stickers just don’t hold up with the humidity and temperature variation. Many will come off and generate litter, increasing the total waste stream.

Build Patrol Spirit

Choosing a patrol name can sometimes be a fun process. Usually it’s a learning experience for the scouts in the patrol. They learn how to compromise and make a decision about something important to them. Self-identification. In my scouting experience, we always had non-standard patrol names. It’s just the way the troops worked. My first patrol was the dolphins. We squeaked for our patrol cheer. We were supposed to make the patches ourselves, but in the end, my mom (founder of ClassB) made the patches with oil paint on a blank patch. My next patrol was the lynx patrol. We used the generic bobcat patrol patch and always had to explain we were the lynx, not the bobcats :( In both cases, I believe that choosing any patrol name we wanted, gave us ownership of the patrol. We always had great patrol spirit, imho. I can remember the first patrol meetings with such clarity because it was the first time a group of kids my age had a shared responsibility without adults. The patrol method is key to the scout’s development and a successful troop. – Eric

Scout Patrol Patches: a Key element of the Patrol Method

In Scouting, patrol patches are not just fabric and thread; they are badges of honor that signify identity, unity, and accomplishment within the patrol method. These patches are a cornerstone of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), providing a visual representation of each patrol’s spirit and individuality. As scouts journey from joining a troop to experienced scouts and leaders, these patches serve as a colorful reminder of their adventures and achievements.

The Significance of Patrol Patches

Patrol patches are worn on the right sleeve of the scout uniform and are vibrant symbols that represent each patrol’s character. Each patrol within a troop selects a unique name and a corresponding patch, which fosters a sense of camaraderie and pride in the patrol. This choice is often inspired by animals, mythical creatures, or other powerful symbols that embody the qualities the patrol admires, such as strength, bravery, or often a sense of humor.

Design and Customization

The design of patrol patches is where creativity meets tradition. While a few patrols opt for classic designs available through official scouting retailers, there is a growing trend toward custom patches. Custom designs allow scouts to express their unique identity more vividly. These can include anything from a phoenix for a patrol that prides itself on overcoming challenges to a dragon symbolizing strength and courage.

Custom patches are not only a fun aspect of patrol identity but also an exercise in teamwork and decision-making. Scouts must collaborate to choose a design that reflects their collective vision, teaching valuable lessons in compromise and consensus-building. It helps to build pride in themselves and keep them in Scouting.

Patrol patches in the Boy Scouts of America are a fundamental element of the scouting experience. They encapsulate the spirit of each patrol, fostering a sense of identity and pride. As scouts design and wear these patches, they engage in learning experiences that cultivate creativity, teamwork, and leadership skills. Ultimately, these patches do more than just decorate a uniform; they weave a rich tapestry of memories and lessons learned along the scouting trail.

For those involved in scouting, or for parents considering this enriching experience for their children, understanding the role of patrol patches can provide deeper insight into the values and benefits of the Boy Scouts of America. These patches are not just emblems of participation; they are badges of life-long skills and friendships forged under the banner of scouting.
