Announcing the winner of ClassB’s 1st Family Reunion
April 1, 2011

We at ClassB would like to announce the winner of our first annual 1st Family Reunion contest. There were many great entries talking about how important family is and how, in this day and age, it’s difficult to get an entire family together. Almost all of you talked about having family spread throughout the country and even the world.  We also got entries from families that were so big that even when you lived in the same town, you didn’t know who all your cousins were.

Another common theme was how families often only seem to be able to get together when there is a passing in family which aren’t the most joyous occasions. It was said many times that you wanted to have more of a celebratory event filled with fun, games and connecting instead of somber occasions where folks are understandably not in a talkative mood.

So, without further ado, ClassB would like to congratulate Jennifer L. and her family for being the winners of $500 in free custom t-shirts. Her essay, written below, summed up everything this contest was about and we hope the free custom t-shirts we provide for her family will add to the occasion and help them remember the good times for years to come.

Winning essay by Jennifer L.

“I grew up in a very tight-knit family. I was close to all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins.  In a typical week we were together more nights than not.  At that time there was no need for a reunion, because every day was about family. Over the years we started moving further and further apart.  We get together less and less.  Other than my grandmother’s surprise 80th birthday party, I can’t think of another happy occasion my family has been together.  Now the only time the family gathers is for funerals, and even then there is always someone missing. This summer we have all made a commitment to go back to where our grandparents lived and to hold our first ever family reunion.  We are all looking forward to this and putting great efforts to make sure it is a wonderful day for everyone.  There will be a slide show with pictures of those that are no longer with us, special gatherings from years past, and the new generation.  We want to show them where our family is from and to tell them stories. A t-shirt isn’t in our budget, but it would be a very nice token for everyone to have of this reunion and to hopefully inspire this a commitment in the future.”

ClassB® at the Honda Grand Prix with BSA® Motorsports.
March 31, 2011

Last weekend, ClassB had the honor of being guests of Dale Coyne Motorsports and the #19 BSA Indy Car for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Florida.

The event marked a lot of firsts for everyone involved. It was the first Grand Prix of the season for the IZOD Indy Car Series drivers. It was also the first Indy race for four-time Champ Car Champion Sebastien Bourdais, who drives the BSA car for Dale Coyne and BSA® Motorsports.

Unfortunately, Bourdais wrecked in warm ups and was unable to go come race time, but it wasn’t a total disappointment for the team as they were able to pull off a miracle and get their other car, driven by rookie James Jakes, ready to go just before the race began. Jakes performed admirably in his first ever Indy race, finishing 15th after starting the race in the very last poll position.

The Dale Coyne Team looked sharp in their BSA branded team shirts and were more than happy to provide us with behind-the-scenes access right up until the race started. We hung out with the drivers in the team bus, watched the team mechanics work on the cars, and walked pit row complete with a demonstration of how cars are refueled and tires are changed.

It was a special day at the track for ClassB and the Scouts from the local council who showed up for the excitement. Check out this year’s

race schedule to see if a Grand Prix will be taking place near your council. Scouts with an interest in automotive technology will love the opportunity to meet this talented team and see the Indy cars in action.

Shade Structure Program

Deadline: April 22, 2011

Chances are, many of your 4-H club’s projects and events take place outside in the sun. Wouldn’t it be cool (no pun intended) to be able to provide shade and UV ray protection in an area where your club meets or spends a lot of time?

The American Academy of Dermatology awards grants in the amount of $8,000 each for the purchase of permanent shade structures for nonprofit organizations serving children and teens who are 18 and younger. The AAD also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure that promotes the importance of sun safety.

Find out if your club is eligible and learn how you can get sponsored by an AAD member dermatologist.

Students pursuing any field of scholastic endeavor are eligible for the award, but preference will be given to those students who plan to enter the bee industry.

Midwest School Garden Grant

Sponsored by the Grandchildren of Helene and Mark Eisner and presented by the National Gardening Association, 11 schools will receive $1,000 in materials and funding to lay the foundation for their garden program.

Educators should be planning to use the garden to teach students life skills, reinforce academics, develop environmental stewardship, and encourage students to make positive choices for themselves and the planet. Both established and start-up garden programs are encouraged to apply.

If you think your 4-H club could benefit from this funding, learn more and download an application here.

ClassB at the Allohak District Pinewood Derby
March 24, 2011

A few weeks ago, the Allohak District held their annual pinewood derby sponsored by Pack 311 and Darby Community Church. ClassB was fortunate enough to be invited to judge the design competition.

It was a beautiful day and things got off to a great start as the sponsoring pack served up a hot breakfast of Pancakes. Burgers were offered for lunch, for a small fee.

The opening ceremony was awesome. The leader asked all the Scouts to recite this classic derby poem in preparation for the day’s festivities: My car is wood, The wheels are vinyl, I race for fun, and the Judges decision is FINAL!

ClassB had the honor of judging the cars entered into the design competition. Some of the categories were: military, patriotic, scout-themed, and food designs. The design level of the cars entered was superb and it took our judges many rounds and an organized point system to finally determine the winners, but in the end everyone left happy.

Enjoy more pics of the event.

Attending local Scouting events such as this one, is one of the perks of what we do. Thank you to the leaders of the Allohak District for extending us the invitation!
