Proper Laundry Care For Your New Custom T-Shirt
October 12, 2010

Proper Laundry Care for Printed T-shirtsAt ClassB, we know that your custom t-shirts are special to you. So we want to make sure you get the most out of them and make them last as long as possible. To make it happen, proper laundry care is crucial.

To ensure proper care of the t-shirt itself, we always recommend following the manufacturers suggestions which you will find on the label. This will lessen the likelihood of your T-shirts shrinking, stretching or losing their color.

But what about the print?

How do you care for your T-shirt without your custom artwork fading, cracking or chipping?

Sticking to the simple guidelines below can help keep your T-shirts around a lot longer.

Always Remember – Heat Is Bad!

Washing machine tips:

  • Turn your washer settings to the “delicate” cycle, and use the cold/cold water temperature selection. Using cold water and delicate settings will help preserve both the colors of your T-shirt and the print.
  • Before washing, turn the shirt inside-out. This prevents the design from rubbing against other fabrics and washing machine surfaces, which causes premature fading or chipping of the print.
  • Use your detergent and softener as normal, making sure to follow the T-shirt manufacturer’s suggestions. When in doubt, use cold water. Never use hot water!
  • Just about every T-shirt manufacturer suggest washing with like colors. This is definitely important, but you should also remember to wash with like fabrics as well. You don’t want to wash your t-shirts with blue jeans or heavy jackets. Instead, wash with other garments that are made from similar or softer fabric, like silk or other jersey knit cotton t-shirts.
  • Do not use bleach. Steer clear of laundry detergent that contain bleach as well.

Drying Tips:

  • Never tumble dry your T-shirts on the heat cycle. Always let them tumble dry at room temperature.
  • Never wring-out the shirt. This will cause cracking and chipping of your custom design.
  • If possible, hang your shirt on a hanger and let it air dry naturally. Do not hang the shirt by stretching out the neck – always pull the hanger through the bottom of the shirt.
  • It is fine to use an iron on the shirt if the manufacturer’s instructions say so, but DO NOT iron over or close to the print. Remember, heat is bad.

Eventually your shirts will begin to fade and show signs of wear and tear. This happens with all garments and there’s really nothing you can do about it. But following these simple guidelines, you should be able to enjoy your ClassB® custom t-shirt for many years to come!

Recognizing Your Group Volunteers – A Great Idea
October 11, 2010

We understand that volunteering your time and energy to a cause or organization is about helping others and helping you feel better about yourself. But there’s nothing wrong with giving a little recognition to members of your group or organization who go above and beyond when it comes to their volunteer work.

There are dozens of awards which are given out every year to those who excel at volunteering, such as The President’s Volunteer Service Award, the Do Something Awards, or the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. You can find most of them by doing a quick search online.

Perhaps there is someone in your group or community that you could nominate for one of these awards. Just being nominated would be a great way to show them that their efforts do not go unnoticed. It also shows that as a leader, you respect everyone in your group and the goals you are all working for.

If it’s too late to nominate someone for one of these awards, or if you can’t find one that fits your organization, there’s no need to worry. You can simply create an award of your own and nominate several of your group members to receive it. After a set amount of time, and if the award goals are met, you can present it to the winner(s) at a group meeting or get-together.

You can find free printable certificates online. They’re customizable, they look official and you can’t beat the price! Or, if you have the funds, you may also consider giving a gift to the winner(s) or those who gave it their best effort. Things like keychains, patches, coffee mugs or ornaments make great gifts for volunteers.

So take a little time and decide how you can recognize your go-getters. Not only will this completely make the day of the person(s) who receive the award, but it can also serve as an incentive for the rest of your group (and even yourself) to get out there and do even more.

Have you ever been nominated or won a prestigious volunteer award? Do you have other ideas for volunteer recognition? We want to know how you have recognized your group members, or been recognized in the past. Share your stories with us by leaving a comment below.

4-H News for October 8th…

  • As most of you know, October 6th was 4-H National Youth Science Day. Hopefully most of you participated in the event and learned a lot about water quality and how it can affect climate change.

This year’s experiment was the idea of Dr. Stephanie Luster-Teasley of North Carolina A&T, who teamed up with her colleague, Dr. Greg Goins to compete against other Universities for the chance to lead the national experiment.

Well, they won the competition and as a result, millions of kids all over the World took part in the experiment and received a great learning experience.

Click on the link below and watch the video to learn more about Dr. Luster-Teasley and see other kids participating in the experiment – Congratulations on your achievement doctor!

  • The moment I saw this story, I knew it would be in the lineup this week! Back in June of this year, a tornado smashed through the small town of Wadena, Minnesota causing widespread damage. The small town was devastated, including its local 4-H club.

Fast forward to September 27th. In another small town a few miles down the road, the East Otter Tail 4-H Club was collecting their Blue ribbon auction winnings. But they had something else in mind.

The East Otter Tail 4-H Club, eager to help their fellow 4-H’ers, donated a large portion of their auction winnings to the Wadena 4-H Club to help them replace what they had lost in the tornado.

This is something that both 4-H clubs will remember for the rest of their lives, and something that every single one of us can take a lesson from.

What else can we say? Kudos to the East Otter Tail 4-H Club. We wish both of your clubs the best!

Giving From the Heart And Hand

  • 4-H, It Runs In The Family!

Here’s a great story about a family in Mason City, Iowa. When the two youngest children joined 4-H, they marked the 4th generation of the family to have been involved in 4-H.

What’s interesting about this story, aside from 4 generations of 4-H’ers, is how much 4-H has changed, while maintaining the core values and traditions that make 4-H such a meaningful organization.

Click on the link below and read about the different 4-H memories of 4 generations! There is a video link there as well.

  • The state of Illinois is very close to production of the brand new 4-H Specialty License Plate. But they need your help. If you live in Illinois, visit this page see if you can help them make this a reality.

Once they receive 1500 commitments, the plate can officially go into production and begin funding 4-H programs across the state.

Here’s a picture of what the plate would look like, and a link to the page where you can support the push for the plate. Purchase an Illinois 4-H License Plate.

Not from Illinois? Does your state have a 4-H license plate?

  • As we talked about above, Wednesday was the 4-H National Youth Science Day. With that in mind, it was interesting to see this story out of Abilene, Texas.

4-H Clubs throughout Texas will soon be widening their programs to include the fields of science, engineering and technology and they will be included in the State Roundup this year. If you’re interested in these fields, the good news is that, until they gain traction, you won’t have to qualify at the district level, you can go straight into the state level competition!

This will definitely open up new opportunities for 4-H’ers and we want to know your thoughts. Leave a comment below!

This Week in Scouting – October 8th, 2010
October 8, 2010

Hey everyone! There’s a lot going on in Scouting all over the country this time of year. Here is a short list of some cool things we’ve found this week.

If you have any news you’d like to share, feel free to leave it in the comments section below.

  • Have you ever wanted to be like James Bond and rappel down the side of a high-rise building? That’s exactly what they’re doing in downtown Los Angeles on October 29th, 2010. And you can be one of the lucky ones to rappel down the tower if you act fast.

It’s called “Over The Edge,” and is being hosted by the Los Angeles Area Council. As far as fundraisers go, this is about the most “extreme” that we have seen in a long time. Click on the link to sign up or get more information…and good luck!

    Over The Edge

  • Our vote for the coolest fundraiser this week goes to the Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts of America in Massapequa, New York. They succeeded in putting together a fundraising event that would be tough for anyone to top. They teamed up with the actual New York Islanders NHL Hockey organization and had a rally at Nassau Coliseum!

I can’t think of a much better place to get people pumped up to sell popcorn! Great job guys.

Apparently this is just the beginning of a great relationship as the Islanders hockey team has invited the Scouts back to the Coliseum for a sleepover the night before their season opening game – complete with movies on the giant screen and, of course, plenty of popcorn.

  • Have you guys heard about Adventure Base 100? It is an interactive experience for people of all ages to experience the adventure of being a Scout. 10,000 square feet of it!

Along with all sorts of displays, games and activities, they have an IMAX-style movie theater dome where people can sit and experience a multi-sensory movie about going Scouting, including sights, sounds and even smells.

They are traveling the country and will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma this weekend. Click here for info on the Tulsa stop.

Or try their official site to see when they’ll be in your area – Adventure Base 100

  • Our Volunteer Story of the Week brings us to the St. Louis area. There, Vicki Baxter first became interested in the Scouts when her son joined the local troop many years ago. But 15 years later, even after her son is grown, Vicki continues to volunteer her time and energy to the Scouts and her local community.

    Awesome job Vicki!

  • For the 22nd straight year, The Bay-Lakes Council of Boy Scouts of America are filling the shelves in pantries all over Wisconsin. The annual food drive currently serves 23 Wisconsin counties!

If anyone is looking for a Good Turn or a project to do, consider organizing a food drive. There are people going hungry all over the country, and food drives like this one get food to people who are seriously in need.

    Awesome job, Bay-Lakes Council!

Well, that’s it for this week. Obviously we cannot find all of the news and cool stories every week, so if any of you have news of your own you’d like to share, just leave it in a comment below.

Scouting Magazine Takes Stance On Burned CDs
October 8, 2010

Have you read the Ethics column in this month’s issue of Scouting magazine? This article is getting a lot of reactions online, particularly the following excerpt about not listening to legally burned CDs in front of Scouts:

Is Burning CDs Unethical?

“So how can Scouters teach ethical behavior related to music downloading? One way: Set a good example.

When you haul around Scouts in your car, for example, only play CDs that you’ve purchased. If you play CDs that you’ve burned—even if they’re legal—your Scouts may not recognize the difference between those and the pirated CDs friends have given them.”

The article cites a survey of 1,000 people between the ages of 15 and 24 where 61% of respondents said “they didn’t think they should have to pay for the music they listen to.” According to the study, that number rose to 69 percent among 15 to 19 year olds.

Clearly, this is an issue. What do you think you should do as a Scout leader to teach youth about piracy? Do you think listening to legally-burned CDs sets a bad example?

Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below!

This Week In Scouting – October 1st, 2010
October 1, 2010

Hey everyone! This is the first of a new weekly series where we’ll be bringing you interesting news and stories from the world of Scouting. Our main goal is to keep you up to date on Scouting news, but we will also be sharing a collection of fun, interesting and motivating stories from news sources and scouting blogs all over the Internet.

Make sure to bookmark this page and/or subscribe to our feed so you don’t miss out on anything!

____________________________________________________________________________________

It’s the first week of Autumn, and we want to start off the season with some stories to get you motivated and finish off this year with a positive mindset and the inspiration to make a difference in your Troop and Community.

Just like these guys did…

  • Wow, this Scout must really like his teacher!
When he saw that she was about to be struck by a car, he pushed her out of the way and took the hit himself. He is recovering nicely, and the teacher says he saved her life. He’s going to receive a special honor medal from the BSA, but I wonder if he’ll get extra credit on his next test.
Awesome job, Fernando! – El Paso Boy Scout To Receive High Honor For Act of Heroism

  • The young man in this story is “all the buzz” in Oakland. He is so passionate about beekeeping that he is asking the BSA to reinstate the Beekeeping Merit Badge. He was even able to get the help of the Haagen Dazs Ice Cream Company who helped him collect thousands and thousands of signatures and letters of support. I think it’s safe to say he’s been as busy as a bee!
It goes before the board of directors in October. – Thirteen-Year-Old Boy Scout Petitions Boy Scouts of America to Reinstate the Beekeeping Merit Badge

  • These guys are awesome roll models for any young man. Both started as boys in Cub Scouting and have been best friends since. One of them wants to own a theme park and design state-of-the-art roller coasters and the other wants to improve space flight at NASA. Sounds reasonable to me since they both own unweighted 4.0 GPAs and are looking for any Ivy League college to attend!
Congrats to all the new Eagle Scouts everywhere – Best Friends Become Eagle Scouts Together

  • Here’s a great story out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Troop 2 is a Boy Scout Troop just like all the rest, but they have a special focus on boys with special needs.
Many of the Scouts have mental or physical disabilities. But guess what, they do all of the things that every other Boy Scout is expected to do. When an obstacle is met, they just use different techniques to get through it.
Kudos to Scoutmaster Lloyd and all the boys in Cedar Rapids Troop 2! – Special Needs Troop Joins in Centennial Boy Scouts Celebration

  • What are the odds?! Six brothers, six Eagle Scouts. Well, it happened earlier this month in Georgia when the sixth of the family’s brothers reached Eagle Scout. But to make it even more unbelievable, their father and grandfather are both Eagle scouts too.
What is mom feeding these kids?! – Family’s six sons all reach Eagle Scout

Hey parents, have you been thinking about becoming a Scout Leader? Take a look at this blog post – Ten Reasons To Be A Scout Leader. And here’s a follow up to that post – More Reasons To Be An Adult Scout Leader.

Have a great Autumn everyone, and we’ll see you next week!

4-H News for October 1st…

  • How would you like to receive a $3,000.00 scholarship and another $3K to donate to your favorite charity? How about $20K, $30K or even $50K? OK, that may be a silly question, but if you hurry over to the J.C. Penney Facebook page, you can enter to win. All you have to do is submit a 250 word essay on a community project you are planning, along with a photo, and J.C. Penney will choose the winners. But you’d better hurry, the deadline for entry is October 3, 2010.

  • Now this is what we call taking the initiative – Mary Kersetter, who grew up participating in 4-H, recently traveled to war-ravaged Iraq and introduced the 4-H idea to Iraqi civilians. And they can’t get enough of it! In fact, Mary has already formed three 4-H clubs in Baghdad and Anbar.
But Iraq has a different culture than the U.S. Check out this story about how Mary was able to weave 4-H into the culture of the Iraqis.
    – Awesome job, Mary! – Frenchville Native Uses 4-H to Aid Iraqis

  • This week, our 4-H volunteer award has to go to Anne Keene of Monroe, Louisiana. Anne started in 4-H when she was just a girl, and years later became a volunteer when her own children joined their local Club – and she hasn’t stopped! Even after her children grew up and moved on, Anne kept on volunteering for decades, over 30 years. Now that’s worthy of some applause! Anne is being inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in October.
    – Read more about her commendable story here – Volunteer Put Heart Into 4-H

  • How does your garden grow? Through hard work and commitment, which is what these 4-H’ers have done in Arkansas. As a community project, they volunteered their time and energy into helping get a community garden started in their local park.
If any of you are looking for a way to help your community, this is an awesome idea. Community gardens not only look nice, they actually put food into the mouths of hungry people and provide a spark in community development. They will also be helping in the harvesting and distribution of the produce.
    – Another super job! – Health Coalition, 4-H Members Cultivate Community Garden West of Hamburg

  • While we’re on the subject of helping others, lets shine the spotlight on a group of 4-H members in Worthington, Minnesota. The “Elk Tip Toppers” gathered things for, packed and donated 65 drawstring bags full of items for foster children in their community. When the Elk Tip Toppers found out that foster children have very little of their own, sometimes just the clothes on their backs, they sprung into action. Gathering donations from local stores and businesses, they were able to put together these much-needed packages.
    – You can read all about their story here. Great job Elk Tip Toppers! – 4-H Club Compiles Bags for Children Placed in Foster Care

Well, that’s it for now everyone. If you have a story or news event you’d like to share, please send them to blog@classb.com.

4-H Clubs Get Involved In 2010 International Coastal Cleanup
September 22, 2010

Last weekend marked the 25th anniversary of the International Coastal Cleanup, where volunteers from all over the World gather in their local communities and help clean waterways, parks, roadsides and, of course, coastal areas.

ClassB was proud to have been able to participate in the event this year, collecting trash, litter and debris from our local community. We all had a really fun time and look forward to joining in next year as well.

One thing that we recognized immediately at the event was that there were tons of youth organizations and younger folks who were not only participating, but taking charge and going above and beyond anything that was expected. This included 4-H Clubs all over Florida, and we’re sure all over the United States as well.

If you missed it this year, or you were not aware of the event, this is certainly one that you will want to mark on your calendar for next year. It is usually held on the third Saturday of September, but make sure to double-check, and contact your local Coastal Cleanup Organizer or County Office as the time approaches.

We hope to see you all next year!

If you want to read more about our day at the Cleanup, or learn more about the event, take a look at this post -> ClassB 2010 Coastal Cleanup.
