BSA Rules for Patrol Patches

Uniform Wear patrol patch requirements:

• • 2″ round patches
• • Background is khaki twill or thread
• • Maximum of 3 other thread colors
• • Not be offensive
• • Not use licensed images
• • No letters or numbers in design
• • Design approved by the BSA

Why do ClassB patrol patches have such a low minimum order? We are passionate about Scouting and from our Scouting experiences, we feel the patrol method and patrol spirit is key to keeping kids in Scouting. We lose about $40 on each order of patrol patches. We make up some of that if patch overruns are ordered by another patrol. We view this product as key to the goals of Scouting and do our best to keep the price at a point where the Scouts can have the experience and we don’t lose to much :)

Patch Sustainability Efforts

ClassB is switching to 100% recycled PE plastic for the backer on embroidered BSA patches! We will use the current stock up and should be fully transitioned to recycled plastic by the end of 2021. We are very proud of the increased sustainability of our scout patches. It was difficult to get the chemistry right for the ink to be stable on the plastic during the heat process. The first rolls of the backer are OK (see picture). Print quality is getting better with every roll.
BSA patches have an option to use 2 stickers in place of the plastic backer. We can do this, but the stickers just don’t hold up with the humidity and temperature variation. Many will come off and generate litter, increasing the total waste stream.
Patches that are not BSA licensed can skip the backer all together for even more sustainability.
